Matthew Brown Fellowship

The Matthew Brown Fellowship is a grant-funded faith-based service-learning program that unites three entities: our church, Washington and Jefferson College, and the community. Besides providing a scholarship opportunity for students, the fellowship was established to keep the historical connection between W&J College and the church, as this was the campus church when the college was affiliated with the Presbyterian faith. That affiliation no longer exists but by sitting on the campus edge, we are surrounded by the college and its life. Many years ago, Matthew Brown was the first president of Washington College and, at the same time, served as pastor of our church, hence the fellowship name.

Honor students are selected through an application process.  They are interviewed, hired, and placed at local non-profit agencies where they work a set number of hours and receive a stipend from the grant monies. Fellows attend monthly meetings where they explore and discuss their community service work as it relates to their academic, personal, and spiritual lives. Local and distant mission projects are also periodically offered.  A student supervisor works alongside the fellowship director to help guide meetings, visit agencies, keep time records, and select topics of discussion.

Some of the participating agencies are:

Citizens Library

Donnell House (Hospice Program)

First Presbyterian Church Music Scholar

Habitat for Humanity

Literacy Council of Southweatern PA
